Hungate history

Hungate lies within the city walls, to the south east of the ancient Roman garrison. Through the ages the site has been a Roman settlement, home to Viking traders and a Carmelite Friary. Only a few minutes walk from the pedestrianised city centre and the stunning Minster, Hungate is the perfect location for a new life in the city.

Funded by Hungate (York) Regeneration Ltd, York Archaeological Trust is undertaking one of its largest ever excavations: DIG Hungate. The dig will excavate the Hungate site, carefully uncovering its rich heritage from the Roman period to the present day.

During the excavation, residents and visitors can tour the site, visit the exhibitions and take part in the actual dig. Recent finds at the site include Victorian children’s games, fragments of 18th century pottery, jewellery and figurines.
